The Fashion Opera is a dramatic and theatrical composition of fashion combining the elements of theater, fashion, fashion presentation, and literature created to express the art of fashion and the depth of the stories behind and alongside the expressions of fashion.
A perspective about The Fashion Opera
Historically, "fashion" has been the pallet of which cultures have expressed themselves artistically, politically, spiritually, and socially. In the positive, fashion can be used to create a great external expression of self. In the negative, fashion becomes the litmus test filled with judgment, social compliance, classism, prejudice; and it is also used as a symbol to express supremacy. The change in fashion is often a symbol of so much more.
Over the years, I have come to find that all expressions of fashion are directly related to the structure of our world reflecting it’s perceptions of gender, race, ethnicity, economic class, religious beliefs, and moral compasses. However, fashion is so much more than clothing, hair, style, and accessories. By definition, fashion includes behavior, lifestyle, manner … sir names, entertainment, furnishings, and architecture. Fashion is also words, attitudes, belief systems … customs, music, and cultural and artistic movements. Even the act of attending certain events and destinations are part of the term, fashion. Most interestingly, the term often refers to all things considered appropriate for the time, and it is within the latter part of the definition that a dynamic paradigm of social and political constructs emerge in regards to “who’s who” and “who matters”. Fashion is far more a complex term than many may realize, and behind every expression of fashion are countless stories as dramatic and fantastical, beautiful and ugly, oppressive and liberating, destructive and uplifting as the garments, accessories, and hair that we wear … whether by choice or by force.
